Changing Teams

I'm building the mythology for Legends of the Dark Tower--both the rules of the universe and the lore of Arlayne--as I go.  These caps are an important piece of that; they establish that, while players usually take over the bodies of their own characters, sometimes they take over other characters, the game's "non-player characters", or NPCs.  That lets me dramatically expand the types of characters players can take over and the types of stories I can tell.

Long Live the Queen 24 and 25

You can follow this and my other series on my series page.

Beat the Heat 3

"They alone remembered their old lives; to everyone else in the world, they were beautiful young women, Lisa and Cassie.  It was uncomfortable, being the only two people in the world who remembered what their lives used to be like. "

Got to admit, as much as I love my new life, I feel this way sometimes.  It's hard being the sole bearer of the memories of an entire reality.  But at least I have you guys to share my memories with. :)

Beat the Heat 1 and 2

Also.  This was originally going to be a single caption; I liked the idea of the misprinted passes.  But as I wrote the cap, it occurred to me that it could be fun to follow these characters for a year--the duration of their passes--to see how they cope with being women.

So I'm going to be experimenting with a different kind of series, one that follows Luis and Cameron in real time.  We'll check in with them from time to time throughout the next year, until their passes expire on July 23rd, 2017.  I guess it's kind of like what I'm doing with my diary caps... except, of course, that Beat the Heat is a fictional story, whereas my diary captions are about my real life.  But, you know, the idea of dropping in and out of someone's life in real time is the same.

Beat the Heat won't follow any regular kind of schedule, and I don't know how many captions I'll end up writing for it.  I have an idea of where it's going to end, but I don't know what's going to happen to Luis and Cameron in the interim.  So it should be fun to see how this unfolds. :)

Long Live the Queen 22 and 23

We're transitioning from act two to act three now; the pace of this story is about to pick up dramatically.  We're almost there, folks.

(Suddenly wishing I'd layered in the idea of the breeze earlier in the story.  Note to self for the next time I try something like this.)

Check out my list of series if you need to get caught up.

Raiders of the Lost Remote

Originally this was going to be a single caption, the Well of Souls one.  But the scene between Indy and Marion on the ship is still one of my favorite scenes in any movie ever.  It's funny and quirky and romantic and poignant all at the same time.  Brilliantly written and performed.  So I had to pay it tribute. :)

Blast From the Past

A couple of people have told me that I look exactly like some actress, Muriel Elizabeth Winchester.  Wait, is that it?  Something like that.

Anyway... I've been watching this show that's on Netflix, The Returned, to see what this actress looks like.  It's actually pretty good.  But now that I've seen this Muriel woman... yeah, sorry, I don't get it.  I don't think we look anything alike at all.  She's way taller than me, for starters; I'm 5'3", and she's 5'8".  5'8" is how tall I used to be, and of course I'm shorter as a woman.  And she has a deeper voice.  And she's prettier than me... I guess that goes without saying, since she's an actress and I'm, you know, not.  Mayyyyybe we have some similar facial features, and I guess we're both brown-eyed brunettes.  But you could say those kinds of things about so many people.

Maybe I should take it as a compliment or something, but it just bugs me.

I've gotten some good pictures for captions from this series, though.  This is one of them. :)

(Who names their daughter Muriel in this day and age, anyway?)

On Chainmail Bikinis

I'm having a lot of fun writing Legends of the Dark Tower captions.  It may be my favorite universe at the moment.  I play too many video games; it's fun to riff on the tropes of video games, MMORPGs, and fantasy fiction. :)

Also, you'll notice I tagged this with "permanent".  The players don't know yet that they're stuck in Legends of the Dark Tower forever, so I can't really address it in the captions, but yeah... this is a permanent situation for them.

I've written a caption that deals with the ultimate fate of the players, but I'm not ready to post it yet.

Long Live the Queen 14 and 15

It's getting really cumbersome to post links to every previous part at the end of each post, so I think I'm going to just direct people to my series page.

So... if you need to catch up with this series, please check out my list of series.

Let Me Show You

I'm borrowing this idea from tehswitcher; I think the Minor Shift is a great twist on the idea behind the Great Shift.  If you haven't encountered this idea before, it's basically the same idea as the Great Shift, but with the odds reversed.  Instead of 95% of people switching bodies with someone else, only 5% of the population has switched bodies.  It's a small tweak, but it's one with huge implications.

Series List

I've set up a page where I'll list all my multi-post series, with a link to each part.  So far there's just the one series, but I have several more series planned already.

Check it out.

Long Live the Queen 12 and 13

OMG, plot!

Long Live the Queen is essentially a three-act story; we're now at the end of the first act.  Still a lot of story to go.  I hope you guys are enjoying the story so far. :)

Also, 13-1 and 13-2 were, once again, originally a single caption, which I've had to break up for readability's sake.  My heart continues to break.

Parts 10 and 11              Parts 5 and 6
Part 9                             Parts 3 and 4
Parts 7 and 8                  Parts 1 and 2

The Happiest Girls in the World

I've attended a trans support group off and on.  It's a nice group, full of good people, though I'm too shy to really reach out and make friends there.

If I went back now, none of them would remember me, would they?  Because, yeah, like Amy in the caption, as a ciswoman, I never had any reason to attend my support group.  And if I tried to tell them my story, I'd have the same experience Amy had.  People would just think I was there to mock them.  Or maybe they'd think I was crazy.  Either way, it wouldn't end well.

Actually, it would be even worse for me than it was for Amy, because I can't even explain to people how I turned into a woman.  I don't even understand it myself.

I love love love that I'm 100% woman now.  But I do miss the camaraderie, the solidarity, that I used to have with my fellow trans people.

Growing up trans can leave deep scars in your psyche.  My psychic scars didn't go away when I woke up as a woman; I'm still carrying around a tons of baggage.  Used to be I could unload some of that baggage by talking about it with other trans people, or with my cis allies.  But what do I do with it all now?
