The Noob 38

The NPCs--some of them, anyway--are beginning to evolve past their programming.  That's not necessarily a good thing.  Amara was programmed to violently raid villages and capture people to sell off as slaves; while she may eventually be able to move away from that kind of lifestyle, her immediate impulse is still to choose a violent solution to the problem in front of her.  Amara is a dangerous woman; unpredictability certainly doesn't make her any less dangerous.

Evan struggles with the violence of Arlayne.  I think most people would.  I see Evan, though, as particularly sensitive.  He may never have been able to express that sensitivity before, but his stoicism is breaking down.

Maybe he's becoming a real person, too.

The Noob 36

What would it be like to be an NPC who's becoming self-aware?

Tale As Old As Time

The animated Beauty and the Beast is one of my favorite movies.  I identified so hard with Belle: a bookish, introverted, isolated young woman who didn't fit into her expected role in society and who wanted to live another life.

The Noob 32

Evan has indeed killed a bandit who looks exactly like this woman...

Diary - Ballet Wishes Barbie

I spent Saturday evening with some relatives; my aunt gave lilies to all the women in the family, myself included.  I'm not much of a flower person... but it was really nice to be included in that.

I Love Exchange Island!

One of the questions the Exchange Island universe raises is whether body swapping technology exists other than Exchange Island, and if so, why not.  For story purposes, I think it works better if only Exchange Island has access to body swapping technology... but it's a bit difficult to explain why only they would be able to swap people's bodies.

I think the most reasonable explanation is simply that they're the only company that's developed body swapping technology, and they're trying to hold onto a monopoly on the technology because they want to have a reason for people to visit the island.

Pep Talk

The FOSE is not native territory or me.  Recent experiences aside, I've been asexual for most of my life, and I'm still not especially comfortable talking about sex.  I've never experienced an orgasm, in either of my bodies.  So a universe that hinges on orgasms is not the best fit for me.

I do have a few ideas for this universe, though.

The Noob 28

I put a fair amount of thought into the size of the world and the distances Evan and Paul travel when I was writing this series.  Because this story is, in a sense, structured like a road trip, I get to explore the size of Arlayne in a way that I can't in a one-off caption.  Arlayne is a massive world, one and a half times the size of earth; I wanted to try to convey some of that scale in this series.

The game worlds of most MMOs and "open world" video games are, by necessity, dramatically scaled down.  It's impossible to hand-craft a truly full-scale world... and it probably wouldn't be much fun to play in such a world, since it would take hours or days to get from place to place.

The Arlayne Paul and other players of Legends of the Dark Tower were familiar with was probably no larger than a small town.  The Arlayne Paul and Evan are travelling through now is immeasurably more vast.

Also... banks.  Banks are such a weird convention in MMOs.  You can put an item in your bank, and then you can withdraw it on the other side of the planet.

Clearly there's some sort of magic involved.

The Noob 27

This marks the midpoint in The Noob; 27 captions to go.

This was a key scene in the development of this series, when I was first laying out the plot; it was the scene that made me realize that Evan was attracted to Paul.  At first, I thought Evan might be a straight guy wrestling with his body's impulses; but, elsewhere in my Legends of the Dark Tower captions, characters seem to retain their original sexual orientation.  But then it occurred to me that it might be interesting to tell a story about a closeted gay man in a woman's body who's attracted to his best friend.  Et voila, the romantic subplot of this story was born.

The Daughter She Always Wanted

I usually try to stick with a single perspective when I'm writing a caption; there's not enough space in a caption to juggle multiple perspectives.  But I really liked jumping from Maureen's perspective to Chris's perspective in this one.

The Noob 26

I liked Alicia.  I especially liked her relationship with Evan; the conversations between the two of them were some of my favorite scenes to write in this series.  But her part in this story is over.  This isn't a story about Evan and Paul and Alicia; it's a story about Evan and Paul.

Plus, you know, I ran out of appropriate pictures of Manu Bennett.

I think it's important, too, to touch on the idea of death in a story like this.  Legends of the Dark Tower universe is about learning to live in a fantasy world; death is a part of that.  And it's important, too, to acknowledge that, while resurrection is easy and automatic in a game like Legends of the Dark Tower, it might not be so easy once the game has turned real.  The stakes are too low if death is temporary.

Wake Up! Sheeple!

This is probably as close as I'm likely to get to making a furry caption.
