The Noob 54

Thus ends The Noob.

I'm going to miss this series.  We've been with it for so long.  I enjoyed writing it, and I've enjoyed sharing it with all of you.  But, alas, all things must come to an end.  Except, perhaps, for Evan and Paul; they are ageless and potentially immortal, after all. :)

I hope everyone enjoyed the adventures of Evan and Paul as much as I did.  :)

On Friday, I'm going to be launching something a bit different; it's a special series of diary captions.  So stay tuned for that. :)

The Noob 51

When I began writing this series, I didn't realize how important the NPCs would be to it.  The question of the NPCs, and how "awake" they are, and whether they can "awaken" further, has been one of the threads that runs throughout The Noob.  And now it's Evan's ability to connect with the NPCs, to push their programming, to bring them to life that has saved his and Paul's lives.

There's so much I could say about Naraya and Zaraya and the way they understand Arlayne.  I'd love to write a series about these two.

Too Fast

I thought I'd already posted this, but it appears I haven't.  So I'm going to post it now, before I forget again, lol.

The Noob 50

Wow, part 50.  This thing is so long, lol.

But it's almost over.  There are four parts left.  The story of Evan and Paul is wrapping up.

Also, Paul has discovered his magic!  It came at kind of a predictable and Hollywoody moment, I know, but I think it worked for the story.  And he found his magic while fighting a goddess, so, you know, that's pretty cool. :)

The Noob 49

Writing Naraya and Zaraya was fun.  I tried to make them somewhat alien; they don't think like humans, and they aren't bound by human morality.  They, like the players, and like some of the NPCs, are trying to understand their new world; but they're approaching the problem with a different toolset than either the players or the NPCs.  It was an interesting challenge.

I'd Like to Buy the World a Coke

Man, Coca-Cola should pay me for this caption.  How does a humble capper go about getting paid for product placement?

Humans of the Great Shift - Aiden

I won't necessarily continue to alternate Humans of the Great Shift captions and regular captions on my non-series days... but I may for a while, while I build my stockpile of caps back up.

Plan J

The hazards of scientific research.

I assume the machine transformed his underwear in addition to his body.  If not, and he was already wearing his current undergarments... well, perhaps he welcomes this change?

The Noob 44

When you come out to someone, you really want that person to be okay with it immediately.  You don't want to give them the time they need to process your coming out.  It's easy to forget that you're ahead of them, that you've had time to process and understand your sexuality and/or gender identity that they haven't had.  Coming out to people requires patience.

I speak from experience here.

Humans of the Great Shift - Hank

Laying out these "Humans of the Great Shift" captions is a little difficult, especially when it comes to vertically-oriented images like this.  There's just not enough text to work with.  There's more blank space in most of these captions than I would normally leave.  I've kind of embraced it, though... it lets me try a different kind of layout style.

Diary - The Great Shift and Other Universes

An anonymous reader left this comment on "Humans of the Great Shift - Danny":

"Sadly, I don't like the Great Shift at all because the bodyswap lacks ANY originality, any real story. It just happens and where is fun in that? No plots, no greed causing being stuck, no experimentation."

I was going to reply directly to the comment... but was I was thinking about the comment, I began thinking about the function of universes in TG fiction.  I think it's worth writing some of those thoughts up here.  I do touch on why I think the Great Shift universe is a perfect setting for "Humans of New York"-style captions... but really, this post has less to do with that and more to do with the subject of TG universes as a whole.

Humans of the Great Shift - Danny

Over the last few weeks, the writer of TG Swapping Caps has posted a series of captions called "Humans of the Great Shift", based on the blog "Humans of New York."  I love this idea, and I kind of wish I'd thought of it myself.  The writer of TG Swapping Caps suggested other bloggers try the idea out... so I'm doing just that.  :)

The idea is pretty straightforward: post a picture of a person and a brief quote from that person telling their story.  "Humans of New York" uses people on the streets of New York City as its subject; "Humans of the Great Shift," naturally, features victims of the Great Shift.  I've always liked "Humans of New York," and I think it's a brilliant idea to adapt it to the Great Shift universe.

These caps will serve another important purpose for me.  The blurbs that accompany the photographs in "Humans of New York" are fairly brief; so "Humans of the Great Shift" caption should be faster and easier for me to write than the lengthy narrative captions I usually make.  As I wrote earlier today, I'm struggling to keep up with all the writing I need to do for my blog; hopefully, mixing some "Humans of the Great Shift" captions into my blog will give me the space I need and keep me from having to take a break.

These "Humans of the Great Shift" captions are likely to become a regular feature of this blog, so hopefully you guys like them. :)

Thanks to TG Swapping Caps for the idea!

Diary - Slackery

My whole caption-writing project feels like a house of cards sometimes, and not the critically-acclaimed kind with Kevin Spacey.  It's more stressful than I would have expected.

The Noob 41

It makes intuitive sense to me that magic would be something you feel, not something you think.  You want to lob a fireball at someone?  You don't think about the mechanics of combustion.  You just kind of want a fireball into existence.

I mean, I really, really, really wanted to be a woman, and now... here I am.

Strike Me Down

A theory circulated for a while last year that Rey was the reincarnation of Anakin Skywalker.  I propose a different theory.

Seriously, though, that line from A New Hope has always bugged me.  In what way did dying make Obi-Wan more powerful?  I feel like that line never really paid off.  This is my attempt to correct that.

My the Fourth be with you!

GenTek Laboratories

I'm preemptively creating a tag for GenTek, because this seems like a useful vehicle for future captions.

I stole the term "knife ears" from the Dragon Age series, having recently finished Dragon Age: Inquisition when I wrote this.  (My apologies to any elves who I've offended.)
